Maritime Cook Islands Joins Strategic AMSA Roundtable on Decarbonisation

AUSTRALIA – 19 NOVEMBER 2025 – On 19 November 2025, Maritime Cook Islands Technical Manager, Paul Jackson, represented the Flag at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) Third Roundtable Discussion in Adelaide. The session, themed “Alternative Fuels and Emerging Technologies,” brought together a diverse cross-section of the industry, ranging from engine manufacturers and training organisations to high-level representatives from AMSA and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts.

The discussions revealed a distinct maturity in the sector’s approach to decarbonisation, continuing to move forward despite recent delays noted at the international level (MEPC/ES.2). Key topics included a clear trajectory for interim fuel solutions, such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), alongside sector-specific future solutions like electric propulsion for tugs and ferries, and ammonia or hydrogen for major trade routes. The concept of “Green Corridors,” such as the Australia-East Asia Iron Ore route, was highlighted as a practical application of these emerging technologies.

Significant attention was also placed on Seafarer support, specifically regarding training and certification standards required for these new fuel types. Regarding the development of these standards, Paul Jackson emphasized the need for global compatibility: “I only hope that any domestic solutions provide a gateway to what will undoubtedly become STCW components, unlike much of the current training which is not fully recognised outside of Australia.”

Maritime Cook Islands intends to maintain active involvement in these vital discussions to ensure the fleet remains at the forefront of this transition.
