Exploring Africa’s “next frontier” at the Inaugural African Boating Conference

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – 22 October 2025 – Maritime Cook Islands was proud to be on the ground in Cape Town this week for the kickoff of the inaugural African Boating Conference, a major event focused on the sustainable growth of the continent’s leisure marine industry. Representing the flag, MCI Agent Paul Coxon joined over 200 industry leaders and delegates to explore the immense, yet largely untapped, potential of Africa’s marine sector.

The conference immediately reinforced a powerful vision: establishing Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands as the “next frontier” for superyacht and marine tourism. The event began with a forward-thinking keynote from Alderman James Vos, Cape Town’s Mayoral Member for Economic Growth, who emphasized the city’s dedication to advancing Africa’s blue economy. He noted Cape Town’s leadership in marine manufacturing, highlighting that the city is home to 65% of South Africa’s boat-building workforce, and stressed the need for public-private partnerships to strengthen the continent’s connections to the global market.

MCI’s attendance reflects our commitment to global maritime development and collaboration. It was good for us to learn about and identify ways we can support the critical areas highlighted for sustainable growth, which were explored across several key sessions:

  • Marinas and Route Development: Discussions centered on understanding the planning needed for a cohesive superyacht cruising route across the region.

  • Policy and Regulation: Sessions focused on the unified standards and public-private partnerships required to simplify operations and attract international investment. The necessity for unified industry standards was a key theme.

  • Skills Development: A well-attended discussion reinforced the shared belief that a skilled local workforce is the “true engine of the Blue Economy”. This was identified by experts, including IBI Editor-in-Chief Ed Slack, not just as a regional problem for Africa, but as a significant global challenge for the entire marine industry.

“It was an absolute privilege to have attended the inaugural African Boating Conference,” said Paul Coxon. “It’s interesting to hear the experiences of foreign delegates in respect to the superyacht industry and the development of marinas to cater for them.”

The enthusiasm and innovative thinking displayed by delegates established a clear consensus that Africa is poised to be a major player. The future of the continent’s blue economy will be defined by its simultaneous investment in a skilled workforce and the effective policies that govern it. MCI looks forward to supporting these exciting new opportunities as Africa emerges onto the global marine stage.
