AVARUA, COOK ISLANDS – The Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA) announced the retirement of its long-serving Secretary General, Mr. Yuichi Sonoda. Concurrently, ASA Chairperson Mrs. Eleanor Keukura Roi will assume the role of Interim Secretary General.
Mr. Sonoda retires after years of distinguished service, during which he made significant contributions to the Association and the broader Asian shipping community. His leadership was pivotal in strengthening ASA’s position as the unified voice of Asian shipowners, skillfully navigating an era marked by transformative challenges in global trade, decarbonisation, and maritime regulation. Under his guidance, ASA deepened its collaboration with international bodies like the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), ensuring Asian perspectives remain well-represented in global discussions. The ASA expresses its deepest appreciation for his professionalism and unwavering commitment.
Stepping into the interim role is Mrs. Eleanor Keukura Roi, who also serves as the Chairperson of the ASA and the Chief Executive Officer of the Cook Islands Ship Owners Association (CISOA). As ASA’s first Chairperson from the Pacific region, Mrs. Roi has been a passionate advocate for regional cooperation, sustainability, and the active participation of emerging maritime nations.
Reflecting on the transition, Mrs. Roi said: “It is an honor to recognise Sonoda-san, the long-serving Secretary-General of the Asian Shipowners Association (ASA), as he steps down after years of dedicated service. As he does, I am stepping forward as both the ASA President and now also, the ASA Interim Secretary-General. This transition is more than a farewell; it is the passing of trust, responsibility, and duty. I will carry it with everything I have.”
Mrs. Roi’s appointment as Interim Secretary General ensures leadership continuity and stability as ASA moves forward with its ongoing initiatives. The Association warmly congratulates her and looks forward to her guidance during this transition period, while extending its heartfelt best wishes to Mr. Sonoda for a fulfilling retirement.
