
RAROTONGA, COOK ISLANDS – 27th December 2025 – Maritime Cook Islands (MCI) confirms an incident involving the Cook Islands-registered vessel MT Eagle S on December 25, 2024. As the vessel was passing through the Gulf of Finland, damage to the Estlink-2 undersea power cable occurred. This cable carries electricity between Estonia and Finland. As a result of the damage, a boarding and inspection of the vessel was carried out by Finnish Authorities. The vessel was found to be missing its port-side anchor.
The Finnish authorities have detained the vessel and initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. MCI is providing full cooperation to the Finnish authorities and working closely with relevant national ministries to support the ongoing inquiry.
In parallel, MCI has launched a preliminary technical investigation; an expanded inspection of the MT Eagle S has been scheduled and will take place as soon as feasibly possible.
Maritime Cook Islands remains fully committed to uncovering the root cause of this incident and will continue to work closely with all relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure a thorough resolution.
