Maritime Cook Islands was pleased to show its support for the Cook Islands Ship Owners Association (CISOA) as they successfully hosted the 35th Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA) Annual General Meeting in Rarotonga from 24 to 27 May 2026. Bringing together global shipping leaders whose member associations collectively control approximately 50% of the world’s merchant fleet, this landmark summit highlighted the Pacific’s expanding role in global maritime discussions.

Maritime Cook Islands’ direct involvement in the week’s proceedings was focused on welcoming the visiting international delegates, serving as the official sponsor for the opening “Welcome to the Cook Islands Reception” on Sunday, 24 May, at Tamarind House. This gathering provided a warm Cook Islands welcome to ordinary and associate members, setting an inviting tone for the days that followed.

The main conference proceedings, organized by CISOA under the theme “Shipping in the Age of Geopolitics: Trade, Conflict and the Future of Maritime Connectivity,” took place on 26 May at the Cook Islands National Auditorium. The public program featured the ASA International Shipping Forum 2026, which opened with remarks from IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez and included three panel discussions addressing global trade, geopolitical disruptions, and long-term industry strategy.

The forum was followed by the official 35th ASA Annual General Meeting, where Mr. Hitoshi Nagasawa, Vice Chairperson and President of the Japanese Shipowners’ Association, was appointed as the 36th ASA Chairperson. The week’s public events concluded on the evening of 27 May with a Tropical Gala Extravaganza at Te Vara Nui Cultural Village.
