Cook Islands vessels that are required to comply with the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage, 2001, International Nairobi Wreck Removal Convention, 2007 and International Convention on Civil Liability for Oil Pollution Damage (CLC ),1992 must carry the appropriate insurance from an approved P&I club/other insurer.

The Insurance Act 2008, does not apply to P&I clubs or other insurers offering cover to Cook Islands registered vessels that do not operate in the Cook Islands waters. There is no legal or other impediment to any P&I Club / Insurer offering cover to Cook Islands flagged vessels.
